The inn stands at the very middle of Kujukuri Beach. Ten seconds' walk to the sand. Open a window, and the sound of the waves never stops.

A Former Sardine Fisherman's Inn

The owner, Mr. Ogawa (72), spent forty years fishing sardines off Kujukuri. "My body couldn't take it anymore, so I retired and started the inn."

He drew up the plans himself and built the place together with local carpenters. The windows of all three rooms face the sea.

Sardine dishes
Dinner: sardine namero (chopped sardine tartare) and house-made dried fish

The Waves of Kujukuri

Dinner always features sardines — namero, tsumire dumpling soup, sashimi, whole dried sardines.

Sorry it's nothing but sardines. But the sardines here are the best there are. — Mr. Ogawa, the owner

At night, you slip into your futon with the sound of the waves. Nothing grand about any of it — and that is exactly what makes it good.

Ten Seconds to the Sea

In the morning, you slip on sandals and walk to the beach. Ten seconds, and you are at the water's edge.

Walking the empty morning sands of Kujukuri all alone — that alone makes you glad you came.
